I have to be honest, I had a lot of hesitation when it came to working with Marcus initially. Not only is he a friend from high school (making the vulnerability aspect all the more vulnerable feeling) but he also makes a clear point of emphasizing an animal protein focus (which felt intimidating to my mostly-vegetarian ways). But alas I’d come to a point where I felt like I wasn’t in control of my health anymore and I needed for things to change.
I currently work as a registered nurse in a remote community in Northern Saskatchewan. A few barriers that I struggle with are job stress, working long hours as a shift worker switching from days to nights and back to days, difficulty sleeping because of these sporadic hours and thus a resultant lack of energy to exercise or pay much mind to the foods that I was taking in. Though nursing is a rewarding job in many ways, it can sometimes come with a price and leave a person feeling completely drained of life-force and vital energy.
Within the first week I noticed a difference in my health and the way that I felt. The most noticeable aspect over the weeks was the energy that I had to have a life beyond nursing. Very quickly I forgot all my initial hesitations about Marcus' program. He has a unique quality which is both relatable and professional where his relaxed manner creates a space that is open and honest. I felt comfortable talking about some pretty uncomfortable aspects of my journey with food and health. I’m still impressed by how real it got and how much more it is about than just food. Marcus understood that.
So here I be, a slightly smaller healthier and happier version of myself. My experience of stress has decreased to the point that I’m actually surprised if I feel stressed now. Getting enough sleep remains somewhat of an issue due to shift work however unlike before when I do get to bed I am able to fall asleep easily and my quality of sleep has improved quite significantly.
I also have energy. It seems such a simple thing but it’s so big. I have energy for my job. I have energy to exercise after a 12-hour shift. I have energy to cook all my meals and I have energy to dance and sing and read and play instruments. It’s just so beautiful - I have energy.
