The holiday season is upon us and it typically goes hand and hand with more alcohol so here are some tips to manage your calorie intake via booze this holiday season.
Hit the Club
Tonic is pop, it only has 25 fewer calories per can than coke! Substitute your tonic for club soda (it’s calorie free) and you can easily slash hundreds of calories off your total for the evening.
Skip Boozy Beers
I’m a hoppy IPA guy myself so most of my favourite beers have upwards of 6, 7 or even 8% alcohol content and that means a higher calorie load (1 gram of alcohol = 7 calories). Go for beers that are in the 4 or 5% range and it’ll not only reduce your hangover symptoms but also your overall intake a whole bunch!
Same thing goes for wine; an 11% variety is going to provide fewer calories than a 14%’er. This might seem minor but all of these little decisions do in fact make quite a bit of a difference over time. For example, if you go to 2 functions per week over the next 4 weeks and have a couple glasses of vino at each event that’s 16 glasses of wine…and let’s be honest, that’s probably a pretty conservative digit!
Calorie Free Mixers
Swapping out regular pop for zero calorie options makes a HUGE difference. If you’re not a fan of diet pop you can always go for any other calorie free option or even better yet, something like soda with freshly squeezed lemon or lime.
Keep It Simple
Fancy drinks are not only LOADED with calories but will in fact get you white girl wasted…skip them all together. A long island iced tea for example can easily yield the calorie count of a whole meal and after a couple of those you know you’re hitting late night pizza to soak up some of those spirits!
Tall, Single & Ready to Mingle
Order all of your mixed drinks as singles in a tall glass because they’ll take ya longer to drink, it’s easier to combat dehydration and you’ll consume less calories total…win win win.
One last thing to think about when it comes to booze is how your habits are influenced. More drinks typically equate to lower quality food decisions not only while you drink but also in the days to come. I don’t know about you but I don’t crave a nice piece of salmon with some coconut rice and mixed veggies when I’m hung-over…I want heavily processed convenience foods and a lot of them!
