We all want to get the most out of our workouts and the time we put in at the gym but let's be honest; no one feels like training or has the energy to train at full capacity every session.
There are a number of different strategies we can take when we’re just not ‘feeling it’ on any particular day to enhance our workouts and get the biggest benefit!
Good old-fashioned coffee is a great way to boost your energy pre-workout and provide your body with a healthy dose of antioxidants! Drink your coffee black or with a little bit of full fat cream and/or stevia for taste.
Make sure your coffee is organic because java beans are one of the most sprayed crops worldwide! We want antioxidants but we don’t want pesticides or harmful chemicals in our bodies!
If you’re not big on coffee then you can always opt for a simple caffeine tablet to get ya going. They are extremely inexpensive and highly effective! Typically caffeine tabs are sold in 200mg tablets, which equates to roughly a cup and a half of coffee depending on who’s brewing it!
If you’re at the MNT coffee shop it’s more like a small-regular sized cup of my strong stuff!
Ready-made pre-workout powders are all the craze these days for gym regulars. They often contain a proprietary blend (the specific amounts of each ingredient aren’t listed) of caffeine, amino acids, creatine, arginine, beta-alanine and so on.
Pre-powders are a good tool to use when you’re really dragging before a workout. Be careful with these guys though, they often have added maltodextrin or dextrose (sugar) which we don’t want in a powder. They are also very expensive so pre-workout powders are definitely a luxury more so than a staple in your supplement arsenal!
Nootropics (Brain Boosters)
Caffeine or stimulant based products aren’t the only way to increase energy before you hit the gym. There are various nootropic (brain boosting) supplements that can do just as good of a job as caffeine can!
These supplements usually contain a blend of herbs, amino acids and vitamins that will provide you with the same energy that your favorite powder will! Nootropics are also a more expensive route to take however they’re my personal favorite because they don’t stress the body like too many stimulants can!
Now before you go out and buy up a bunch of caffeine tabs, expensive pre-workout powders and nootropic supplements know that the body is amazing at adapting to pretty much anything we throw at it! The best strategy is to switch up your pre-workout protocol so your body doesn’t adapt!
We tend to adapt to caffeine consumption fairly quickly which means if you take one 200mg tablet this week, a few weeks down the road you may need 1.5 tablets to get the same effect and so on!
If you can train all out without any of these energy boosters even better! Technically your food should be supplying you with all the energy you need but I gotta say, it’s pretty fun to experiment with some of these products here and there!
Bonus Tip: If you find yourself with the jitters from too much caffeine at any given time I've had success with taking 2 grams (2000 mg) of Vitamin C right away and the shakes are gone in no time!
