With the holidays coming up alcohol consumption increases dramatically! Work parties, social events and family gatherings fill your December calendar every year. It’s really tough to limit alcohol intake around the holidays so I’m going to outline 7 easy ways in which you can minimize its negative effects on your body!
Green tea can protect the liver from the damage of alcohol as well as accelerate its detoxification from the body. Green tea inhibits alcohols absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, which means less inflammation and improved detox! Drink lots of green tea or better yet supplement with green tea extract for an improved response!
Curcumin is a nutrient found in the spice turmeric. Numerous studies have shown that it protects the liver from alcohol by decreasing the inflammation effect and increasing detoxification time! Throw some turmeric in your meals for its protective benefits as well as improved taste!
Drink Early, Sleep Early
Drinking earlier in the evening will allow more time for your body to detoxify the toxins from booze. A nightcap is a bad idea, it may help you fall asleep initially however it increases the incidence of sleep disruptions and disturbs normal sleep cycles. You’re either someone who sleeps all day (lower quality longer duration) after drinking or barely at all, either way alcohol drastically reduces your sleep quality!
Getting a good sweat in the gym will detoxify lots of toxins from your body via the skin. Also during the holidays chances are your overall calorie intake will be higher than it typically is during the rest of the year. That means you need to compensate by getting quality workouts in and burning the excess rather than storing it in adipose (fat) tissue!
This is an obvious one but has to be addressed. Alcohol dehydrates the body so consuming lots of water before, during and after a night of drinking is crucial! After each drink and before the next sneak a quick glass of water in. It takes seconds and radically improves detoxification while reducing hangover symptoms the following day!
Adding freshly squeezed lemon to your alcoholic beverages and/or water before, during and after you drink is a great idea! Lemon is a natural liver detoxifier, so make it a habit to add it to your water after a night out or even on a daily basis! The liver is a potent fat burning organ so keeping it functioning optimally will also keep your body composition in check!
