Generally there are 3 distinct ‘body types’ or somatotypes that include ectomorphs, mesomorphs and endomorphs. Usually we are a mix of a couple of these ‘types’ but there are some people at the extremes as well! What somatotype are you…let’s find out!
Ectomorphs are naturally thin with skinny limbs. They have long, thin muscles and limbs with a low capability for fat storage. These are the people we hate, they can eat whatever they want and they don’t gain weight. They have marathon runner looking bodies and their body fat percentage is typically low year round (yes even during Christmas time…assholes…)
They have fast metabolisms and a very good ability to handle the carbohydrates they eat. Sounds awesome right? Not in all cases! Ectomorphs have a super tough time putting on muscle and a particularly breezy day may blow one over. These people are typically my muscle building clientele as opposed to fat loss.
The health hazard that goes along with being an ectomorph is you can get away with eating shitty food and not putting on fat. Unfortunately I know some ectomorphs with ridiculously poor nutrition, just because you’re thin doesn’t mean you’re healthy!
Mesomorphs have average sized bones, a solid torso, wide shoulders, narrow waists and controlled body fat levels. Sounds ideal right…it is! Meso’s are your typical bodybuilder or 100 meter sprinter. They have a very favorable hormonal make-up, build muscle pretty easily but also stay relatively lean!
These people have a moderate carbohydrate tolerance so they can’t handle as many carbs as an ectomorph can, but they can build muscle much easier! Mesomorphs are looking for more refinement when they come to me, they want to add a little muscle and get visibly leaner!
Endomorphs are naturally thicker and broad by nature. They can put on muscle quite easily however they can also add fat with ease! This is your typical powerlifter or football lineman body type.
Endomorphs have a low carb tolerance so overeating carbohydrate will really ramp up their body fat levels. Sounds horrible doesn’t it…poor ability to handle carbs and an easy time storing fat? However it’s not all bad being an endomorph because EVERYONE can get lean, but everyone can’t build a bunch of muscle (i.e. ectomorph)! Endomorphs are my typical fat loss clients; they have the muscle to begin with however they struggle dropping the fat!
The great thing about being an endomorph is that you’re forced to watch what you eat or else your body composition will suffer! Unlike an ectomorph if endo’s abuse the wrong foods they will gain body fat.
Some would say that endomorphs are actually the most efficient body type because we humans are meant for survival. An ectomorph would wither away quite quickly, a meso not quite as quick but an endo has lots of body fat to use for fuel!
Instead of cursing your parents, bad genes, slow metabolism and whatever else, work with the body type you’ve got! Instead of wishing you could have someone else’s body type or metabolism, optimize yours!
Work what your mamma gave ya!
