Hunger is most often seen as a negative sensation and is avoided at all costs. Unfortunately many people don’t know what hunger really feels like! Hunger and cravings are two completely different sensations and it’s very important to differentiate the two in order to avoid eating when you’re body doesn’t need to. Hunger occurs in the stomach and/or the brain. Nutritious food will satisfy hunger however only certain foods will satisfy cravings. Craving is an emotional sensation rather than physical. Hunger will not go away unless you eat, cravings come and go in spite of food intake!
The body can only detoxify itself fully when there isn’t food entering your body. When you're eating your body is working for as long as it takes to break down the incoming food and either excrete, store or burn it off. Its important to give your body a break from time to time in order to really clear out and allow the body to work its magic!
Resting the Digestive System:
If you are constantly consuming food your digestive system is working overtime without a break. When you eat, your digestive tract is breaking food down, churning it in your stomach, secreting various enzymes and binding nutrients together to send to different tissues throughout the body. Give your body a break from time to time so your digestive tract can heal and rejuvenate itself properly!
When you have the flu or other various infections your appetite often goes out the window, why? Because your body senses that there is an equilibrium unbalance and shuts down hunger in result so it can clean and detoxify itself. If there is a constant flow of food coming in it can delay the healing process (depending on your sickness) significantly.
When you allow yourself to feel hungry from time to time your blood sugar balances out and insulin sensitivity improves. Insulin sensitivity is extremely important because the more sensitive your body is to insulin, the better it handles the carbohydrates you ingest!
Enhanced Mental & Emotional States:
When your hungry your mental clarity, awareness, sight, hearing and smell will often increase! Evolutionarily when we were hungry it meant we were out of food and it was time to hunt. Our bodies are so efficient that when hunger kicks in all your senses and mental capacities increase in order to find food and survive. Enhancing such sensations made us more capable of locating food and therefore surviving!
Don't assume that every time you feel 'hungry' you have to eat! Often it can just be a craving so learn to distinguish the difference for yourself so you become more in tune with your body and you can reap the amazing benefits that hunger can have.
